KompetensLab

KompetensLab – Innovation and Co-Creation for the Future of Health and Welfare

KompetensLab is a development project that is building a high-tech competence environment in Turku for the social and health care sector. The project is run by Novia University of Applied Sciences and funded by the Eschnerska Frilasarettet Foundation.

At the core are three operational environments:

  • A training center for clinical care work
  • A training center for social client work
  • A modifiable simulation environment with testbed functionality

The aim is to create a safe and controlled space where new ideas, products, and methods can be tested and developed together with users – such as patients, staff, and students. KompetensLab serves as a test and innovation center where participation and co-creation are fundamental principles.

Why KompetensLab?

  • Enables early user involvement in development processes
  • Reduces risks and costs when implementing innovations
  • Promotes interprofessional learning and competence development
  • Strengthens regional collaboration between education, care, and industry

Towards a testbed platform

During the project period (2025–2027), KompetensLab will evolve into a platform with testbed operations where companies, research projects, and public actors can collaborate on innovations in the welfare sector. The goal is to create a vibrant environment for development, testing, and learning – with a focus on sustainability, inclusion, and quality.
